“Rampart” is a deep, visceral and thrilling character study of a man whose soul is unraveling while the world around him crumbles. Woody Harrelson gives the performance of his life as Dave “Date Rape” Brown and somehow makes us sympathize with a character who is truly one of the most corrupt and decadent police characters put on film.

Set in Los Angeles in 1999, the film captures a time when public trust in law enforcement was brought down by the exposure of police corruption in the Rampart precinct. Rather than take on the widespread malfeasance, director Oren Moverman, sharing writing credit with crime novelist James Ellroy, constructed a story around one very bad cop running rampant in Rampart.  It is not a straight-ahead procedural about police corruption–it’s after something much more ambitious than that.It is in it’s way an investigation into the nature of masculinity and vulnerability, a wild tone poem that asks whether it’s possible to maintain some semblance of humanity in our chaotic, sun-drenched apocalypse. For all of its punishing pathos, the movie does not have the clean lines and elegance of another cut at crime in this city, L.A. Confidential. As the day of reckoning approaches, the film spins out of control, careening between convoluted subplots, with the emotional pitch of the piece swinging too wildly.
