Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
A silly but spectacular sequel to the passably entertaining 3D hit Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Journey 2 features the same forgettable teenage hero in Josh Hutcherson. Sean Anderson partners with his mom’s boyfriend, whom he hates (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) to find the ‘mysterious island’ Jules Verne wrote about, on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on the mythical island. This turns out to be an excuse for outlandish special effects, including Michael Caine riding bareback on an oversized bee.
Luis Guzman has the thankless task of supplying racially stereotyped, unfunny comic relief, while Vanessa Hudgens is eye candy for dads, running around in very short shorts. Johnson, at his most anodyne, trots out his party pieces, flexing his chest muscles. This is a manufactured Hollywood product without wit or originality, but the larger-than-life animals and gold-spewing volcano will keep children amused. It will also probably be the biggest hit of the week.
